Menu scan

Know what to order before you order

Most calorie apps help after you've eaten. MacroScout helps while you're still reading the menu. Take a photo of it, and MacroScout checks the dishes against the calories and protein you have left today, then shows you the three that fit best.

  • Dishes ranked Best fit, Good fit and Also fits, each with calories, protein, carbs and fat
  • Estimates are adjusted upward for restaurant cooking, which hides extra oil, butter and sauce
  • Sharing a platter? Choose a quarter, a third, half or the whole dish, and log only your share
  • Common allergens such as peanuts, dairy, gluten and shellfish are flagged on each dish (always confirm with the restaurant)
  • When MacroScout is unsure about a dish, it tells you
  • Your menu photo is used for the scan and then discarded, never saved

Photo logging

Snap it. Logged.

Point your camera at your plate, or pick a photo from your gallery. MacroScout estimates the calories and macros in seconds, and you can change any number before you save it.

  • Calories, protein, carbs and fat for every meal, plus fiber, sugar and sodium
  • Every value is editable before it goes into your log
  • Meals are filed under breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack by the time you ate

Your plan

A plan built around your goal

Answer a few quick questions about your height, weight, activity and goal, and MacroScout sets your daily calories, protein, carbs and fat. When your weight changes by 2 kg (about 4.4 lb) or more, your plan updates.

  • Goals: lose weight, build muscle, maintain your weight, eat healthier, or a lower-carb split for steadier blood sugar
  • Weight trend chart and BMI, so you watch the trend instead of one day on the scale
  • Log runs and workouts and see the calories you burned
  • A streak calendar that rates each month from Bronze to Diamond

AI coach

Ask, and log the answer

Not sure what to eat next? Ask the built-in AI coach: "What should I have for lunch?" or "Am I getting enough protein?" When it suggests a meal, you can log it with one tap.

Real food

Built for the food you actually eat

MacroScout is tuned for home cooking and regional dishes, not only packaged food. That includes South Asian meals like roti, paratha, daal chawal, biryani and salan cooked in oil, measured in everyday portions like a katori.

  • Set your diet once: halal, no beef, pescatarian, vegetarian or vegan. Menu suggestions respect it
  • A late dinner counts as dinner, not a snack

About MacroScout

MacroScout is a calorie and macro tracking app for iPhone and Android, made by independent developer Javed Iqbal. You log a meal from a photo, a voice note, a short description, a barcode or a manual entry, and MacroScout turns it into calories, protein, carbs and fat measured against a daily plan set for your goal.

What sets it apart is the menu scan. Instead of guessing at a restaurant and fixing the numbers afterwards, you photograph the menu and MacroScout shows which dishes fit the calories and protein you have left, with the estimate adjusted for restaurant cooking.

Frequently asked questions

Is MacroScout free?

Yes, it is free to download, and the free plan lets you log up to 10 meals a day by barcode, by repeating a recent meal, or by entering food yourself. Photo, voice, text and menu logging are part of MacroScout Pro. New accounts get a short free trial of Pro, and the price for your country is shown in the App Store or Google Play before you pay.

How accurate are the calorie estimates?

Estimates from a photo, a voice note or a short description are estimates, not lab measurements, and portion size is the biggest source of error. That is why you can check and change every number before you save a meal. For restaurant dishes, MacroScout adds a margin for cooking oil and butter and tells you when it is unsure. For packaged food, scanning the barcode is the most precise option.

Does MacroScout work for Pakistani and other South Asian food?

Yes. MacroScout was built with South Asian dishes and portions in mind, including roti, paratha, daal, biryani and salan, and everyday serving sizes like a katori.

Can I use it if I eat halal, vegetarian or vegan?

Yes. Go to Profile, then My goals, then Diet, and choose halal, no beef, pescatarian, vegetarian or vegan. Menu scan recommendations follow your choice. If it matters to you, confirm ingredients with the restaurant.

Is my menu photo saved?

No. A menu photo is used only for the scan and then discarded. Photos of meals you log are saved with that meal so you can see them in your history.

Can I delete my account and my data?

Yes. In the app, go to Profile and choose Delete account. This removes your account and the meals, weight, water and activity you logged. Deleting your account does not cancel a store subscription, so cancel that in your App Store or Google Play settings as well.

Which phones does MacroScout work on?

MacroScout is available for iPhone on the App Store and for Android on Google Play.

MacroScout is a general wellness tool. Calorie and nutrient numbers are estimates, and the app does not diagnose, treat or prevent any medical condition. If you have diabetes, kidney disease or an eating disorder, are pregnant, or take medication that affects what you eat, follow the advice of your doctor or a registered dietitian.
